Fed: More wastewater should be used, Democrats

The Australian Democrats say more wastewater should be reused in city parks, gardensand agricultural areas.

Democrats Energy and Resources spokeswoman Senator LYN ALLISON says reusing wastewaterand sewage effluent would help alleviate drought conditions and pressure on rivers.

Senator ALLISON says it's ludicrous that only 14 per cent of sewage effluent from treatmentplants is currently reused.

She says Australia has the need, the technology and the skills to treat this effluentto a level that's safe for reuse, but governments generally lack the vision or the commitmentto seriously tackle this waste.

Senator ALLISON says Australia loses around 1325 gigalitres of wastewater to oceanoutfalls annually with the CSIRO predicting an increase to 1803 gigalitres by 2020.

She says the government should mandate more aggressive re-use targets and programsto be adopted Australia-wide for retrofitting existing homes.
